Marvel's 'Black Panther' Hires a Writer
While everybody has been trying to figure out who the director is going to be for Marvel's Black Panther, the studio went out and hired a writer for the film. According to The Wrap, Joe Robert Cole is working on closing a deal that would install him as the scribe on the superhero flick, which is set to be Marvel's first solo film featuring a non-white hero.

Cole seems like a somewhat risky choice, since his only other film credit was the 2011 indie film Amber Lake, about three half-sisters who come under suspicion when their father turns up dead. Cole both wrote and directed the thriller, which is very little known and doesn't have a single critic's review on Rotten Tomatoes. But Marvel must have seen something in Cole to hand over the keys to what could be the start of a new franchise film. Plus, they could always end up giving him the Nicole Perlman treatment.

Perlman was a first-time writer whom Marvel hired to pen Guardians of the Galaxy, and she did, but when James Gunn was hired as director he rewrote virtually the entire script. It's possible the same thing could happen with Cole's script, but we won't know until the script is done and Marvel hires a director - in that order. Earlier in the week, Straight Outta Compton director F. Gary Gray was rumored to be in the running, but Marvel is saying that no one is being seriously considered until after the film has a script. Which, thanks to Joe Robert Cole, is now being worked on.

And by the way, things turned out OK for Perlman, too. She's on board as a writer for Captain Marvel.
