Guillermo Del Toro Gives Updates on Pacific Rim 2 and Hellboy 3
Guillermo Del Toro has at least two (possibly) defunct sequels that fans desperately want to see: Pacific Rim 2 and Hellboy 3, and in a recent interview with Happy Sad Confused, he gave updates on both, with varying degrees of optimism.

Let's get the bad news out of the way first: it still looks like Hellboy 3 isn't going to happen. As we know, Ron Perlman is raring to do it, and Del Toro wants to complete the trilogy as well, but when it comes to studios, "No one is knocking," he said. While Hellboy and Hellboy 2 became cult hits, and therefore performed well in DVD sales, with the increase in downloading movies don't make money that way anymore, so the prospect of a third film is not financially attractive.

But onto better news, Del Toro still insists that Pacific Rim 2 is not dead. For now, it is just pushed back, even though it was removed from Universal's schedule:

Opening quote
"In three weeks we are delivering a [new] budget and a schedule and a new draft of the screenplay," said Del Toro. "And then the studio knows how much it costs, what is it about and then they'll decide if they go ahead or not."
Closing quote

That actually is encouraging, as it seems that there is a concrete plan for reviving the project (or killing it, as the case may be), but Del Toro admits that if it does happen, it won't happen for a good long while.

Opening quote
"It's certainly not my next movie," he said. "With the push, I feel compelled to do something small and weird, because I need a breather and a little bit more madness in my life."
Closing quote

And remember that Godfather-style trilogy about Jabba the Hut that Del Toro said he desperately wanted to make? It turns out he actually talked to higher-ups at Lucasfilm about it.

Opening quote
"When I spoke to them, when I spoke to [Lucasfilm's Chief Creative Officer/Senior Visual Effects Supervisor, Industrial Light & Magic] John Knoll, I said to them, if I ever do one, I would love to do a Jabba The Hut Scarface-his ascension in the crime family."
Closing quote

He goes on to quickly insist that the project is not at all in development ("I'm not announcing it, please don't pick it up!"), but even so, this is a much more real proposal than we ever thought it was. We assumed he was mostly just joking, dreaming geek dreams out loud like the rest of us. If there's any possibility at all that this will happen, we're happy campers.
