Star Wars Episode VIII Casting Call Reveals Which of the Original Characters Survives The Force Awakens
Ever since it was announced that the old guard would be returning for Star Wars: The Force Awakens, fans have been speculating that one or more of them will be killed off before the end of the film. Now, an official Disney casting call seems to confirm which of the characters from the original trilogy will survive long enough to film scenes for Star Wars: Episode VIII.

Possible spoilers ahead! (Click to reveal)

Here you have it, folks: according to the post on Movie Casting Call, Mark Hamill, Carrie Fisher, and Harrison Ford will all be back to reprise their classic roles for the second installment in the new trilogy.

Opening quote
Returning to reprise their roles in "Star Wars: Episode VIII" is Golden Globe Award nominee Oscar Isaac as Poe Dameron; Daisy Ridley as Rey; Black Reel Awards nominee John Boyega as Finn; Academy Award nominee Harrison Ford as Han Solo; two-time Primetime Emmy Award nominee Carrie Fisher as Leia; and BAFTA award winner Mark Hamill as Luke Skywalker. Also joining the cast of "Star Wars: Episode VIII" is Academy Award winner Benicio Del Toro, who will play the role of a villain.
Closing quote

This isn't all that surprising, especially Mark Hamill was already pretty much confirmed for Episode VIII. And of course it's good news, as it would have been borderline cruel to bring back these beloved characters only to kill them off right away. But on the other hand, it would have been really bold to kill off a major character early on, and would have shown faith in the rebooted franchise and new characters. It's hard to really be disappointed, although it would have been exciting if those rumors about Han Solo getting murdered by Kylo Ren were true, and it's kind of a bummer to know this early that all of the main characters will survive this next film.

The casting call describes a search for two female lead roles, any ethnicity, from ages 20 to 35, who are "physically fit," "confident," "outgoing," and possessing a "strong personality." We already knew they were casting two lead female roles, but it's a little strange that this casting call is coming out now, as Gugu Mbatha-Raw was reported to be in talks for one of the roles, and Tatiana Maslany, Olivia Cooke, and Gina Rodriguez were rumored to be on the shortlist for the other one. Does this mean Disney is going back to the drawing board?

Star Wars: The Force Awakens comes out on December 18, while Episode VIII is set to hit theaters on May 26, 2017.
