UPDATED: Fantastic Four Rumored to Be Back at Marvel for a 2020 Film
The newest Fantastic Four was a very high-profile embarrassment for Fox, with many fans wondering if the studio will ever be able to make a film that does the iconic characters justice. Now, those fans' dreams may be coming true, as Den of Geek's sources are reporting that Fantastic Four is returning home to Marvel for a rebooted film franchise.

Apparently, the rights returned to Marvel as part of an agreement for an X-Men TV show. There have been rumors for some time now that Fox was developing a live-action X-Men television series, and most recently, it was reported that Fox and Marvel came to an agreement that will allow Fox to make two X-Men television series, Hellfire and Legion. This would take a lot of finagling on Fox's part, as the X-Men are Marvel's characters, and according to Den of Geek, Fox gave Marvel the rights to Fantastic Four in return.

UPDATE - 10/15/15 10:28 am

Collider reports that their "high-up sources" deny that Marvel has the movie rights to Fantastic Four. That could mean that a deal is still taking place, as Den of Geek was unclear about whether it had fully gone through or not, or the entire thing could be fabricated.

Collider also states that Fox didn't have to do any kind of trade with Marvel, as they already had the television rights to X-Men. But we know it's not that simple, because Fox Television Group chairman and CEO Dana Walden told THR back in August that they were "in negotiations with Marvel" for the TV show, so Marvel definitely had to sign off on it, as they retain the comic book rights to the characters. So in conclusion, no one knows what's going on.

Although this is still just a rumor, and it seems counterintuitive (slash too good to be true) that Fox would give up such potentially lucrative characters, it's definitely possible. Fox has been doing very well with their X-Men properties, and the fans have simply lost faith in them when it comes to Fantastic Four. Sony came to a deal with Marvel about Spider-Man when they were in much less dire straits with the character; the Amazing Spider-Man movies weren't hugely successful, but they weren't embarrassments like Fantastic Four.

Marvel recently scheduled three as-yet-untitled films for 2020, and Den of Geek's source reports that one of these is a Fantastic Four reboot. If this does happen, it would be amazing, especially since Marvel hasn't really let us down so far (with the possible exception of Age of Ultron). I would hope that they would keep Fox's cast, as the immensely talented actors were the only thing that worked about Fantastic Four, but the same could be said for Andrew Garfield in Amazing Spider-Man, so sadly, Miles Teller, Michael B. Jordan, Kate Mara, and Jamie Bell are likely history.
