Legendary and Warner Bros. Confirm Release for Dates Godzilla v Kong, Godzilla 2 and Kong: Skull Island
Fans of giant primates and lizards rejoiced earlier this year, when reports suggested that the Kong: Skull Island project was moving from Universal to Legendary with a view to uniting King Kong with his fellow cinematic behemoth, Godzilla. Now, Legendary and WB have confirmed their plans to create a new cinematic monster universe, announcing the release dates for a trio of movies that will culminate in the epic monster mash of Godzilla v Kong in 2020.

Here's the official line-up as announced by Legendary and Warner Bros.

March 10th 2017 - Kong: Skull Island

June 8th 2018 - Godzilla 2

2020 - Godzilla v Kong

Unifying the Kong and Godzilla universes will be the Monarch Organization, which was featured in Gareth Edwards' 2014 Godzilla movie. An organization specializing in the study of giant organisms, it's likely that Monarch will be sending a few of their experts to Skull Island in 2017, but beyond that, details as to how Legendary will bring their two monsters together remain painfully few and far between.

Tom Hiddleston, who is set to star in Kong: Skull Island, says that the movie will take the King Kong myth in an entirely new direction, shirking the now-cliched 1930's version of the giant ape.

Opening quote
It's not set in the '30s," Hiddleston told Variety. "There's no movie director with a map. There's no out-of-work actress down on her luck. All of that stuff is respected, we're just trying to do something new with the myth because Kong is an icon of movies. I think he's someone people want to see again."
Closing quote

Kong: Skull Island will also star Brie Larson, Sam Jackson, and John Goodman, with Jordan Vogt-Roberts directing. As for Godzilla 2, we know that Gareth Edwards will return to direct, but which of the first movie's cast will make a return has not yet been announced. Regardless, this is a great time to be a monster lover.
