Co-Writer For Batman v Superman Talks About The Green Arrow Film That Almost Happened
David Goyer is known for his work on quite a number of comic book movies; from films like Batman Begins, to The Dark Knight, to Man of Steel, and to the upcoming Batman v Superman, Goyer has written or co-written them all. Now, Goyer has gone on the record about the Green Arrow movie that never was.

Den of Geek recently had the chance to ask the writer if he believed his idea for the film, which included quite a number of infamous DC villains (such as the Joker, Riddler, Lex Luthor, etc.) was ahead of it's time in light of the relatively recent decision to make a movie all about the bad guys with Suicide Squad. Goyer had this to say:

Opening quote
"I think it absolutely was[…]I think if that script had come over the transom a couple of years later… It was completely ahead of its time".

"By the way, everything I see about Suicide Squad looks fantastic and it's a different story. But it was absolutely ahead of its time. You know, Marvel was considering doing the Sinister Six and at the time, God, I think this was eight or nine years ago that we wrote a couple of drafts, but it certainly was like this oddball project at Warner Bros at the time, they were like - even though the script was good - 'why would we make a movie about a bunch of villains? That makes no sense'."

"The executive on it was really visionary[…]but the higher-ups, none of whom are at Warner Bros any more, just thought at the time, you know, we just want to make Batman and Superman movies. We don't want to make any other characters. But this is before Marvel had really taken off, before more obscure projects like Guardians Of The Galaxy or Ant-Man or things like that had huge success, before the current gold rush I guess, if you will. It's natural that eventually someone was going to make a villain movie, so that's just what happened!"
Closing quote

It's interesting to note that the two major ideas for Goyer's movie have now become a reality. First, a live action adaption starring Green Arrow as the protagonist was finally brought into being with the CW's hit TV show, Arrow. Likewise, a movie focused on some of the big bads of the DC Universe is on it's way next August with Suicide Squad. While it's unclear how well these ideas would have meshed, credit definitely has to be given to Goyer for having these ideas long before they were actualized.

While almost any DC fan alive would have loved to see Green Arrow: Super Max, the fact that it didn't happen can definitely be seen as a sort of blessing in disguise. If the movie would have happened, the DCEU as fans know it today almost definitely wouldn't have come to be. The probability of a Suicide Squad film being made after a movie like Super Max would have been extremely low.

Goyer also commented that he would definitely not be directing any of the upcoming DC movies, but from his rap sheet, directing's not as much of his thing anyway. That doesn't mean DC fans won't be seeing his name pop up from time to time, however. Goyer has been involved with writing the scripts for both Man of Steel and Batman v Superman (with Christopher Nolan co-writing Man of Steel and Oscar-winner Chris Terrio doing the rewrite on B v S), so it won't be surprising to hear if he ends up getting involved with future DCEU films in similar ways as well.
