The Martian is Ridley Scott's Highest Grossing Film of All Time
Since its release on October 2nd, Ridley Scott's The Martian has been sitting pretty at the top of the weekly box office charts for an entire month, which is no small achievement for a movie about growing potatoes on Mars. While James Bond is set to knock Mark Watney off the top of the charts this weekend, it won't be before The Martian sets a new box office record, because the tale of Martian survival just became the highest grossing movie Ridley Scott has ever made.

This week The Martian ticked over the $187.7m mark at the domestic box office, officially taking it over the mark Ridley Scott's previous record holder, Gladiator set back in 200. That's a huge achievement for this movie and Andy Weir's brilliant source material.

Think about all of the movies The Martian had to beat to get to that title. Alien, Prometheus, and now Gladiator have all seen themselves topped by Mark Watney and his loveable refusal to die on Mars. But there's one further benchmark for The Martian to cross before it can truly lay claim to the title of Ridley Scott's biggest movie. The Martian currently sits at around $435.6m at the global box office, which is $22m shy of the Gladiator's $457.6m global haul. But with Scott's latest movie not even out in the potentially lucrative Japanese and Chinese markets until February 2016 and November 2015 respectively, there's every reason to think that The Martian has what it takes to snatch Gladiator's global record.

Nice work Mr. Watney.
