Does X-Men: Apocalypse Have a Sequel?
Nobody in their right mind thinks that next year's X-Men: Apocalypse is the last X-Men movie we're ever going to see from Fox. However, producer Simon Kinberg has stated that the film brings the saga to a close as the "culmination of a trilogy", suggesting that the franchise is due for a reboot. The reboot idea is lent further credence by the fact that director Bryan Singer's next film is going to be 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea, which isn't likely to be a quick project. But a new report from Montreal-based Journal de Montreal suggests that a new X-Men film will be shooting in the city in early 2017 - with Singer in charge.

If this report is true, and Singer really is directing another X-Men film less than two years after wrapping Apocalypse, then it seems like a strong possibility that the film will continue the events that take place in Apocalypse. This really shouldn't be that surprising with new versions of old characters like Storm, Cyclops, and Jean Grey all featured in Apocalypse, but the presence of Singer (who has now directed four X-Men movies) suggests that other old characters could be returning as well. So much for culmination.

Then again, the report could be false, or at least only partly true. Maybe there is a new X-Men movie filming in Montreal in 2017, but maybe it's a reboot that Singer is not directing. Or maybe it's not being filmed at all. Who knows.

The main point is that the X-Men franchise is at a bit of a crossroads, with both the Ian McKellen/Patrick Stewart/Hugh Jackman era and the Jennifer Lawrence/Michael Fassbender/James McAvoy era both coming to a close, almost simultaneously, Fox will have to decide whether to move forward with the young team introduced in Apocalypse or blow it all up and start over. At the end of the day, the answer probably lies in how well X-Men: Apocalypse fares at the box office. Just how Apocalypse would want it.
