First Trailer for Midnight Special: Michael Shannon Goes on the Run with His Superpowered Son
The first trailer for Jeff Nichols's Midnight Special has dropped, and it looks amazing, not least as a result of its all-star cast, which includes Michael Shannon, Kirsten Dunst, Joel Edgerton, Adam Driver, and Sam Shepard.

Midnight Special, described as a "sci-fi chase film," follows Shannon's character as he goes on the run to protect his young son, who is supernaturally gifted in some way. It's unclear what his powers are, aside from glowy eyes and such, but they seem to have something to do with the Sun. Naturally, the boy is pursued by both a fanatical religious sect and an evil government branch (headed by Driver, who is making his name playing villains lately).

We're excited for this, if only because of the cast and Nichols's influence. Nichols is known for highly acclaimed movies like Take Shelter (another genre bender that starred Shannon) and Mud, which garnered Nichols a nomination for Best Director at the Independent Spirit Awards and made many top ten lists in 2013.

The official synopsis reads:

Opening quote
In the sci-fi thriller "Midnight Special," writer/director Jeff Nichols proves again that he is one of the most compelling storytellers of our time, as a father (Michael Shannon), goes on the run to protect his young son, Alton (Jaeden Lieberher), and uncover the truth behind the boy's special powers.

What starts as a race from religious extremists and local law enforcement quickly escalates to a nationwide manhunt involving the highest levels of the Federal Government. Ultimately his father risks everything to protect Alton and help fulfill a destiny that could change the world forever, in this genre–defying film as supernatural as it is intimately human.
Closing quote

Midnight Special hits theaters on March 18, 2016.
