Star Wars Rebels Renewed for Third Season on Disney XD
It's only a third of the way through its sophomore season, but already Disney XD have seen enough from Star Wars Rebels to give the animated show a third season. With all the buzz around the franchise right now the move is hardly surprising, but it will come as a relief to the show's fanbase, which has been growing steadily since Rebels first hit the airwaves last year.

Opening quote
"We're very proud of our incredibly creative Rebels team," Lucasfilm's, Kiri Hart told StarWars.com. "The show continues to tell fun, heartfelt, exciting new Star Wars stories week after week, and it's beloved by fans of all ages. Season Three will see our rebel heroes face new obstacles and find new allies in their fight against the Empire."
Closing quote

With LucasFilm looking to aggressively grow the Star Wars franchise, a strong TV presence makes sense. With Rebels' being set some 5 years prior to the events of Star Wars: Episode IV, there's ample room for expanding the journeys of Kanan, Ezra, and the rest of the fledgling rebellion. The renewal also gives fans of Dave Filoni's work more hope that the story of Ahsoka Tano will be continued in some depth. Since appearing on Filoni's Star Wars: Clone Wars, Ahsoka has become a fan favorite character among every just about every demographic going, while the prospect of the young Jedi coming face to face with her ex-Master Darth Vader in Season 2 of Rebels has been one of the big talking points of the show.

While Rebels may have been a bit slow to get going, the introduction of some Clone Wars favorites as well as original trilogy legends like Darth Vader and Wilhuff Tarkin have really helped the show grow. But it's the chance to witness Ezra's growing powers as a Jedi that should continue to be the real driving force in future seasons. Ezra's master, Kanan, has already been the subject of a spin-off comic book series at Marvel and the bond between the two is growing increasingly interesting. None of the Rebels crew appear in the original trilogy movies, so it's going to be interesting to see how LucasFilm slide them into the existing Star Wars canon.

Star Wars Rebels season 2 is currently airing on Disney XD, Wednesdays at 9pm ET.
