George Lucas has Seen Star Wars: The Force Awakens, His Reaction Says it All
George Lucas's relationship with the Star Wars franchise has been, shall we say, a turbulent one. As the man responsible for giving us this captivating movie behemoth, Lucas will always have special place in the heart of most Star Wars fans. However, Lucas has slowly fallen out of favor with many fanatics, the prequel movies and, to a lesser extent, Return of the Jedi were lambasted by many for being too childish. Many rejoiced when it was revealed the franchise had been sold to Disney, the prospect of new management giving fans hope that Star Wars could return to its former glory.

Since the Disney takeover, Lucas has revealed that he had pitched ideas for new movies to Disney execs, but the studio had opted for a vision that was, god forbid, more in-tune with what the fans wanted. He then went on to describe the events as something akin to a divorce. His comments below not only reveal why we haven't heard from him much in recent months, but also that he's not completely over this messy break-up.

Opening quote
When you break up with somebody, the first rule is no phone calls. The second rule, you don't go over to their house and drive by to see what they're doing. The third one is you don't show up at their coffee shop and say you are going to burn it… You just say 'Nope, gone, history, I'm moving forward.'
Closing quote

Earlier this year, Lucas claimed that he had not seen a single frame of JJ Abrams' Star Wars: The Force Awakens, a fact that changed when Kathleen Kennedy showed him the movie in its entirety last week. When asked what Lucas thought of the movie, Kennedy simply responded "He liked it", but after appearing at this weekend's Kennedy Center Honors ceremony, the man himself finally gave us his verdict.

Opening quote
"I think the fans are going to love it. It's very much the kind of movie they've been looking for."
Closing quote

Ouch. While we weren't expecting unabashed praise from Lucas, we certainly didn't expect such a thinly veiled dig at Kennedy and Star Wars fandom. Refusing to say whether or not he enjoyed the movie is one thing, but to go full Maximus Decimus Meridius seems more than a little bit petty.

Hopefully Lucas's emotional wounds will mend soon, but with Disney going full steam on their new Star Wars vision, it seems as though this is a relationship that will remain, at best, a frosty one. In Lucas's defense, he hasn't actually said anything bad about the movie, which he easily could have done if he was ready to completely burn his bridges. Let's just hope he's right, and fans really do love the movie.
