Margaret Atwood Is Writing a Half-Bird Half-Cat Superhero for Dark Horse
Famed sci-fi novelist Margaret Atwood is making her first foray into the comics world, as she is penning a series of graphic novels for Dark Horse called Angel Catbird, about a genetically engineered superhero who is part cat, part bird.

Angel Catbird

Opening quote
"I have concocted a superhero who is part cat, part bird. Due to some spilled genetic Super-Splicer, our hero got tangled up with both a cat and an owl; hence his fur and feathers, and his identity problems," said Atwood.

The series will be illustrated by Johnnie Christmas, best known for his work on the Image Comics series Sheltered and Pisces. Angel Catbird is described as a weird hybrid of Animal Man, Will Eisner's The Spirit, and Marvel's Squirrel Girl, which frankly sounds amazing.

Opening quote
"Angel Catbird is a humorous, action-driven, pulp-inspired story," said acquiring editor Daniel Chabon. "And the only other thing I can tell you at this early date is to expect a lot of cat puns."
Closing quote

The series will be told over the course of three graphic novels, and will be used to raise awareness for the animal charity Keep Cats Safe and Save Bird Lives, the oldest conservation charity in Canada.

Atwood is a well-regarded novelist, both in the literary and sci-fi communities. She is best known for the dystopian feminist novel, The Handmaid's Tale, which won the Governor General's Award and the Arthur C. Clarke Award, as well as the Oryx and Crake speculative fiction trilogy, which is currently being adapted into a TV series called MaddAddam (the name of the third book in the series) for HBO by Darren Aronofsky.

Angel Catbird will be released in the fall of 2016.
