James Cameron Gives Update on Avatar 2
Once the afterglow from Star Wars: The Force Awakens has faded a little, it'll be time to look forward to the other franchises coming out in the next few years, not least of which is the follow-up to James Cameron's Avatar. The famously technical and elaborate series will continue on Christmas 2017, according to the most recent update from Cameron, and will hit the ground running with three movies in three years.

Opening quote
"Christmas of '17 is the target. At least, that's what we've announced," he told the Montreal Gazette. "But I don't consider that to be as important as the fact that when we get all three films done, we drop them a year apart. I call it a meta-narrative that runs across the three movies. Each film stands alone, but it also tells one much larger story."
Closing quote

Cameron stated that the design of Pandora is all but finished, which is the main hurdle:

Opening quote
"We have design more or less finished, which is an enormous task. It's been about a two-year task. [We've finished] all the creatures and the landscapes, and the new worlds within the world of Pandora that you see. The writing is ongoing, but almost finished. Technical development is done. Stages are done. Infrastructure. So we're really poised to start after the first of the year."
Closing quote

Avatar was groundbreaking as a result of its visual effects, so it's good to hear that Cameron and co. are putting just as much effort into world-building this time around. We hope they're putting just as much love into the writing, as the script was the element that needed the most improvement from the first film.

Avatar 2 will reportedly expand the universe created in the first film while focusing on Jake Sully's family. Stars Sam Worthington and Zoe Saldana are confirmed to return, as well as Sigourney Weaver (somehow).
