Lawrence Kasdan Reassures Fans That Han Solo’s Solo Movie Won’t Be an Origin Story
Star Wars is all the talk right now with Episode VII's premiere meeting and surpassing so many expectations. Fans have already begun looking forward to the future, as Disney has announced their plan to release one Star Wars film each year, and one of the most anticipated Star Wars films scheduled to drop focuses solely on everyone's favorite galactic rogue: Han Solo. News of this film was met with divided reactions, with many fans worried that it would end up becoming another Phantom Menace-esque story about a ten year old Han. Now screenwriter Lawrence Kasdan has taken the mic on one of the recent episodes of The Empire Podcast, during which he reassured fans that this wouldn't be the case:

Opening quote
I think it won't be the thing you're worried about. It will not be like here is where he was born and this is how he was raised. I think what it will be is what was he like ten years earlier, ya know maybe a little earlier you'll get a glimpse but… what formed the person we meet in the cantina? It is not so much about his specific history. It is about what makes a person like that? He's not full formed in the cantina! Kurosawa once said 'the heroes are the ones that are still changing and the villains are locked and petrified into what they are' and Harrison embodies in Force Awakens someone that's still not settled on who he is.
Closing quote

Though it's been stated before that the anthology film will probably focus on a late teens/early twenties version of Han, it's great to hear it from the man who's actually co-writing the story. From the sound of it, it seems like the film could end up showing how Han got into the shady business he was involved in way back in 'A New Hope,' as well as documenting some of his earlier adventures during the reign of the evil Empire.

It'll be interesting to see how the movie turns out. 2016's Rogue One will be the first non-episodic addition to the Star Wars universe, and that's arguably the biggest change that any movie has ever made throughout the 40 year history of the franchise. The Han Solo film will be the second film to take this path in 2018, and as it will deal with one of the most beloved fictional characters of all time, there's definitely a lot at risk. Though the film won't be an origin story per se, there are many potential origins and beginnings that it could possibly deal with - such as the beginning of Han and Chewie's relationship, among a myriad of other things. At this point, are there really any origin stories worthy of such legendary icons?

Of course, big risk also usually means a big payoff as well, assuming everything falls into place. And seeing as how Lawrence Kasdan has written/co-written The Empire Strikes Back, Return of the Jedi, and The Force Awakens, there's arguably no one more qualified to take on the task of crafting the perfect Han Solo solo film than him. Here's to hoping things work out and 2018's anthology film will rock just as hard as 2015's The Force Awakens.

The untitled Han Solo anthology film is set to premiere on May 25th, 2018.
