See What BB-8 Almost Looked Like in Star Wars: The Force Awakens
People fell in love with Star Wars' newest droid, BB-8, long before 'The Force Awakens' ever premiered. The movie itself showed, however, that this droid who took on the role of one of the central characters in the film is even more adorable than previously thought. It's hard to imagine what Episode VII would have been like without him, and the thought of a different droid taking his place is akin to blasphemy. Now some concept art has been released showing some different designs for the character, and even though the finished product is absolutely perfect, it's interesting to see what one of this year's biggest movie stars almost looked like:

These images were apparently part of a collection that Phil Szostak, who worked in the art department as a conceptual researcher and archivist for the movie, put together for the film. For those who might be wondering how the idea for the droid first came to be, however, there's more. A featurette on StarWars.com documents how BB-8 started as just a couple of circles that J.J. Abrams drew on a napkin. Here's an image of the napkin along with the video, which also has some more great concept art pics as well:

It's interesting to see how the early designs for BB-8 evidently included different mechanical features made for traction - features which evidently got scrapped before the designers decided on a finished product. They would definitely make sense, but as seen on the video above, BB-8 was a practical prop which really moved right along with the actors - in other words, it seems like he did just fine without the additional parts. For those who may wish to check out even more concept art from The Force Awakens, they can do so here.
