Hayden Christensen's Anakin Skywalker Was Supposed to Cameo in Star Wars: The Force Awakens
Hayden Christensen's performance as Anakin Skywalker in the Star Wars prequels was not terribly well-received, to say the least, but the powers-that-be still saw fit to have him cameo in The Force Awakens in the early planning stages.

According to Making Star Wars, early concept art for the film had Darth Vader/Anakin Skywalker make an appearance as a Force Ghost. Here are the scanned pages from The Art of Star Wars: The Force Awakens book below:

Hayden Christensen was supposed to be in he Force Awakens

Opening quote
"I love that quote from 'A Wizard Of Earthsea,' the fantasy novel by Ursula K. LeGuin: 'When you light a candle, you also cast a shadow.' That inspired me to propose, for the first time, that Anakin's ghost could come back."
Closing quote

Hayden Christensen was supposed to be in he Force Awakens

Opening quote
"If we see Anakin Skywalker, because he does flow back and forth between Darth Vader and Anakin, let's see him as a character with a dark and light side. The reason Luke is this whole new entity is because he was the first to acknowledge his own dark side-that it was not separate from him."
Closing quote

Although this obviously didn't happen for The Force Awakens, it could very well still happen in further sequels. For example, this concept art lends credence to the rumor that Christensen will appear in Star Wars Episode VIII. Reports have been circulating for months that Star Wars sent a U.K. team to train Christensen and prepare him to rejoin the franchise.

I'm actually not so sure this is a terrible idea. Darth Vader is inextricable from the mythology of the Star Wars franchise, especially since Kylo Ren has been established as a Vader wannabe, and the concept art looks pretty cool. And so long as Christensen just makes a Force Ghost cameo, it doesn't really matter that much if his performance is perfect or not.

Star Wars: The Force Awakens is now out in theaters. Episode VIII is slated to come out on May 26, 2017.
