New Doctor Strange Images, Plus Mads Mikkelsen Confirmed as Villain
This morning, we got our very first look at Benedict Cumberbatch as Doctor Stephen Strange, the self-centered surgeon who gains magical powers after losing the use of his hands. Now, we have more pictures featuring Cumberbatch wielding his sorcery and the film's psychedelic visual style, as well as more details on Mads Mikkelsen's mysterious character.

Opening quote
"These gestures are ways of creating the magic. It's a beautiful thing, it's balletic, it's very dynamic," Cumberbatch told EW. "And once the boys in the backroom get to work on it, there's going to be crazy shit going on… There's all sorts of craziness [in Doctor Strange]. Falling, flying, jumping, fighting, punching, getting punched. It's really rough and tumble."

Opening quote
"When this comic appeared in the early '60s, it really informed, in a way that is pretty amazing, a lot of the psychedelic '60s as we know it. I don't know that they were doing anything weird in the bullpen in Marvel, but certainly the stuff they were doing inspired all those people who were doing mind-expansion experiments at the time," explains producer Kevin Feige. "So, that's inherent to the property. And that's our mission statement for the visual effects on this movie."

Feige also confirmed that Hannibal star Mads Mikkelsen is playing the main villain in the film, although we still don't know which Marvel Comics character it corresponds to:

Opening quote
"[He is] a sorcerer who breaks off into his own sect," Feige told EW. "[He] believes that the Ancient One is just protecting her own power base and that the world may be better off if we were to allow some of these other things through."

Marvel has yet to reveal the character's name, although we know that it's not Baron Mordo, as Chiwetel Ejiofor is playing that particular Doctor Strange supervillain. It's somewhat surprising that Mordo isn't serving as the main villain, although he could easily be poised to play a Loki-like character that will show up in multiple films. It would also make sense if Mikkelsen were playing Dormammu, as the demon-like entity is extremely powerful, but it doesn't seem to fit the description of the character.

Doctor Strange comes out in theaters on November 4, 2016.
