Leonardo DiCaprio Confirms He Was Eyed for Anakin Skywalker, Batman Forever, and Spider-Man
Leonardo DiCaprio has had a varied career, starring in blockbusters, small indies, and prestige in-betweens like Alejandro González Iñárritu's upcoming Birdman follow-up, The Revenant. Now, in a new interview with Shortlist, he reveals that there was a juncture in his career in which he was offered several huge nerd roles, including Anakin Skywalker, Robin, and Spider-Man.

Opening quote
"A lot of people may look at what I've done career-wise and say that there was a period in which I tried to possibly become a movie star, per se, [and] tried to go for much bigger pictures," DiCaprio said. "The truth of the matter is, there was a period of time, very early on, when I started watching films and having heroes in the industry, actor-wise. But I feel I've been consistent about my dreams and what I wanted to be as an actor."

It's unclear exactly what he means by this, but I would guess that he means that blockbusters like Inception or Titanic are different from tying oneself down to a franchise. For example, he turned down an offer to play Robin in Joel Schumacher's Batman Forever.

Opening quote
"I never screen-tested. I had a meeting with Joel Schumacher. It was just one meeting and, no, I didn't end up doing it... As I recall I took the meeting, but didn't want to play the role. Joel Schumacher is a very talented director but I don't think I was ready for anything like that."

It's probably lucky that he didn't play Robin in Schumacher's film, since that would have tied him to the widely reviled Batman and Robin, the one with the infamous Bat-Nipples. (Chris O'Donnell, who played Robin in Batman Forever, reprised the role in Batman and Robin.)

Similarly, it's unclear how Anakin Skywalker in the much-hated Star Wars prequels might have affected DiCaprio's career. He confirms that he had a meeting with George Lucas about the role, but ultimately turned it down. He probably would have been better-received by the fans than Hayden Christensen (both talented actors, but DiCaprio was probably more ready for it), but I'm not sure even he could have saved that dialogue.

And finally, he revealed that he was eyed for Spider-Man before Tobey Maguire got the part, but he once again turned it down:
Opening quote
"That was another one of those situations, similar to Robin, where I didn't feel ready to put on that suit yet. They got in touch with me."

The Spider-Man films were pretty great (except for Spider-Man 3 and the emo dancing scene), and DiCaprio probably would have been a perfect Spider-Man, but he seems determined not to play any franchise roles. That being said, the superhero landscape has changed a lot over the last decade or so, and now he might consider himself open to playing a superhero.

Opening quote
"You never know. You never know. They're getting better and better as far as complex characters in these movies. I haven't yet. But no, I don't rule out anything."
