It's Official: Star Wars: The Force Awakens Is the Highest-Grossing Film of All Time in North America
Well, that didn't take long. Star Wars: The Force Awakens is officially the highest-grossing film of all time in North America after making $758.2 million, beating out Avatar's $750 million from its original theatrical run in only 20 days.

This number doesn't account for inflation, of course; on adjusted lists, The Force Awakens is still at #21 with an adjusted gross of $750 million, while Avatar is at #14 with $837 million. But again, it's only been 20 days. It's probably safe to say that The Force Awakens will beat Avatar domestically, even taking inflation into account, although it remains to be seen whether it can topple Gone with the Wind, which randomly takes the top spot at $1.7 billion.

Internationally, Avatar is still on top at $2.78 billion, although probably not for long. On Monday, Star Wars' worldwide total was $1.54 billion, which is probably on track to beat Avatar considering that it's been less than three weeks and the movie still hasn't been released in China, one of the world's biggest markets. Plus, this is just anecdotal, but it seems that people are buying tickets to see Star Wars several times, more so than they did for Avatar. Box office analysts at least agree that it will definitely reach $2.2 billion eclipsing James Cameron's Titanic for the number two spot.

Star Wars: The Force Awakens is now out in theaters.
