John Barrowman Has Written a Malcolm Merlyn Origin Comic For DC
Starting next week, DC will be releasing a digital comic entitled 'The Dark Archer' focusing on Oliver's arch nemesis from the hit CW TV series, Arrow. And who better to write it than the man who plays Malcolm Merlyn himself, John Barrowman?

According to an interview with TV Insider, Barrowman and his sister approached Geoff Johns, the chief creative officer at DC, about writing a completely different comic series but left the room with the task of creating the ultimate origin story for Malcolm Merlyn.  Though an issue will be released digitally every two weeks, at the end of the run, DC plans to publish a trade containing the story which Arrow fans can purchase for their personal collection.

It'll be interesting to see how a comic series written about a character by the person who plays the character on TV actually pans out. According to Barrowman, the series will start between seasons 3 and 4 of the show before flashing back and revealing the untold past of Merlyn, including how he got his riches and what his life was like before losing the love of his life in a cruel twist of fate. The comic will also apparently visit familiar places used in the show such as Nanda Parbat and Corto Maltese.

Merlyn was a compelling villain in the show's first season, and really, he's one of the only Green Arrow centric villains the show has ever majorly focused on. Deathstroke was undoubtedly the show's most popular villain, but he doesn't go toe to toe with Oliver Queen in the comics quite as much as one would think after watching the show - he originally began as a villain for the Teen Titans.

Arrow returns to TV screens across America on January 20th, but of course fans can always get their dose of Arrow through the new digital comic which begins next Wednesday.
