Avengers: Infinity War Will Have 67 Characters
Avengers: Age of Ultron drew criticisms for being overstuffed with characters and plotlines, but that hasn't stopped Captain America: Civil War from including seemingly every single superhero in the Marvel Universe. Now, as news starts to trickle out about Avengers: Infinity War, it seems that the two-parter will get even bigger, and will actually include every single superhero in the Marvel Universe.

Opening quote
"We will say this: People will not be disappointed in the amount of characters in the movie," Joe Russo told Comicbook.com. "The concept of Infinity War is that the Marvel universe unites to battle the greatest threat to the world and universe that you've ever seen, and we're going to honor that concept."
Closing quote

And when they say they're going to unite the Marvel Universe, they're not kidding around. This weekend, at Wizard World New Orleans (via Indiewire), Russo said the cast of Infinity War will be absolutely huge.

Opening quote
"We have so many characters we're dealing with. We're breaking ground on 'Avengers: Infinity War.' We have a board with 67 characters on it," he said.
Closing quote

I can hardly even imagine what this movie will look like. In addition to all of the superheroes from Age of Ultron and Civil War, including newcomers like Black Panther and Tom Holland's Spider-Man, Infinity War must include all of the upcoming superheroes, such as Captain Marvel and Inhumans, as well as the Guardians of the Galaxy. And then I still don't know if we're up to the astronomical number of 67, although it depends on how many Inhumans there are, I suppose.

Although it sounds exciting on its face, this does not sound like good news to me. The 67 number may include characters that aren't superheroes and just play small supporting roles, but still, the escalation is getting to be too much. Age of Ultron was already overcrowded and messy, and in general, bigger doesn't always mean better. If Civil War is good in spite of its huge cast, it will probably be because the Russos focused on the conflict between Iron Man and Captain America to create a streamlined narrative, and fans will probably still be upset that certain characters got short shrift.

Avengers: Infinity War Part I is scheduled to be released on May 4, 2018, while Part II will come out on May 3, 2019.
