J.J. Abrams Surprises Fans with Trailer for Secret "10 Cloverfield Lane"
These days, there are usually no secrets about blockbusters a few months before they come out, but J.J. Abrams' Bad Robot just surprised fans this morning with a trailer for the super-secret "blood relative" to the 2007 monster hit, Cloverfield.

We had heard of this project before, but not under this particular name. Back when they cast Mary Elizabeth Winstead last year, it was called "The Cellar," and then it was code-named "Valencia," and plot details were so scarce, we didn't even know if it was sci-fi or not. It all takes place in-you guessed it- a cellar, in which Mary Elizabeth Winstead wakes up with a mysterious stranger (John Goodman) who tells her that a nuclear holocaust has devastated Earth. He holds her hostage, and she debates whether she should try to escape, as she has no idea whether her surroundings are habitable or not.

Nothing about the trailer or plot synopsis seems like a Cloverfield sequel, but it's definitely some sort of spiritual sequel, as Abrams called it a "blood relative," and the above trailer puts the emphasis on the Cloverfield connection like nobody's business. They might cop out and just call it a relative because it has a mysterious, mostly unseen menace, but judging from the end of the trailer, I would guess that there is no nuclear holocaust, and that Winstead's character can't leave the bunker because there's a Cloverfield-esque monster outside.

10 Cloverfield Lane comes out on March 11.
