Chris Carter Has Written a Third X-Files Movie
The X-Files revival miniseries doesn't premiere until next week, but everyone is already looking ahead to the future of the franchise, including creator Chris Carter. Today, he revealed that before the revival was greenlit, he had written a script for a third X-Files movie, which he considered repurposing for the series when it was approved.
Opening quote
"I actually wrote a third movie, just because I was interested in the idea of where that might go," Carter told THR. "I let my wife read the third movie, and she said 'I think not for television.'"

So since the ideas for the film aren't being used by the TV show, is there a chance we will get to see this movie come to fruition? Carter didn't rule out the possibility:

"I'm waiting for Fox to come back and ask for more," said Carter. "Then we'll talk about it."

On the one hand, it seems more likely that X-Files would go forward with more movies rather than television seasons, as that's much less of a commitment for the actors. On the other hand, an X-Files movie is a little risky; while the first was well-received, the second was missing almost everything we all love about the X-Files. I would be all for an X-Files movie if it were good, but I would be very skeptical that it would be, especially now that the revival's premiere is getting shaky reviews.

But since revivals are the big thing now, there's a good chance that the X-Files will continue in some form if the revival gets a large audience, at least if Duchovny and Anderson's schedules allow for it.

Opening quote
"The biggest impediment to going forward with The X-Files was the schedules of David and Gillian," said Fox CEO Gary Newman. "Even the other night at the premiere, we were all laughing and joking about doing this again."

Anderson has been starring in the BBC show The Fall (which is amazing, by the way), and will return for its third season this year. She can also be seen in BBC's miniseries adaptation of War and Peace. Duchovny stars in the NBC series Aquarius, which was renewed for a second season.

The X-Files miniseries premieres on January 24 on Fox.
