Avatar 2 Delayed to Avoid Competition with Star Wars Episode VIII
It would have been pretty exciting to see two monstrosities like Avatar 2 and Star Wars Episode VIII go up against each other at the box office, like Jaegers vs Kaijus (or Batman vs Superman, for that matter), but this makes a lot more sense. Avatar 2 has been delayed- again- from its Christmas 2017 release date in order to avoid competition with Star Wars, which comes out on December 15.

Episode VIII was originally scheduled for May 2017, but was delayed until the end of the year, reportedly for "positive" script changes in response to the reaction to the new characters in Force Awakens. It was actually pretty ballsy of Lucasfilm to schedule Episode VIII when they did, if only because Avatar is probably the only movie in the world The Force Awakens won't beat

Avatar 2, for its part, has been delayed several times, once rumored for as early as 2014, then 2015. But it was not really a surprise when it was delayed until Christmas 2016, as the post-production for the effects-heavy franchise would naturally take years. Then they started to get a little more specific with Christmas 2016, then Christmas 2017, and now it doesn't have a release date. They're probably waiting to see what happens with Star Wars, especially now that Lucasfilm seems partial to the December slot that Avatar was gunning for.

We don't know too much about the sequel yet, except that Sam Worthington, Zoe Saldana, and Sigourney Weaver will all reprise their roles in the film, a large portion of which will take place underwater, and possibly on a moon of Pandora. It will be the first of three planned sequels to the 2009 movie, with James Cameron claiming that meeting any one date isn't as important as dropping them all within one year of each other.
