Rumor: Is This Cate Blanchett's Villainous Role in Thor: Ragnarok?
Mark Ruffalo already spilled the beans that Cate Blanchett is playing a villain in Thor: Ragnarok, but which Marvel supervillain will she take on? According to a new report, the Oscar nominee is not only playing the Big Bad of the movie, her familiar Marvel Comics character will lead directly into Infinity War.

Possible spoilers ahead! (Click to reveal)

According to Geek.com, Blanchett will be playing Hela, the Asgardian goddess of death. Based on the Norse goddess Hel, Hela is the ruler of Hel and Niffleheim, and has a pact with Death that allows her to claim the soul of any Asgardian and take them to one of her realms. She has all of the powers expected of a Norse god, including super strength, agility, speed, stamina, and durability, but a magical cloak enhances her powers so she is more potent than most beings of her race, including Thor (although she is severely weakened, even crippled, without it). She also has the power to kill mortals with a single touch, making her a pretty terrifying villain.

There's also some speculation that this character will be combined with the embodiment of Death who has a romantic relationship with Thanos. These are distinct characters in the comics, but Death is a very abstract character, possibly too abstract for Marvel, so there's a chance that the two characters will be conflated for simplicity/continuity's sake. Plus, it would be awesome to see Cate Blanchett and Josh Brolin team up as the Big Bads of the Marvel Universe.

The report claims that Hela will be "in cahoots" with Loki, which is no surprise, but it also claims that when she goes up against Thor, things "do not go well." How "not well"? She banishes Thor and destroys Mjolnir, which is pretty much as bleak as you can get. We don't know where Thor will be by the end of the film, but there's a chance that there will not be a happy ending, as there were rumors that he will not be available for the events of Infinity War pt 1.
