Wonder Woman Will Be a 5,000-Year-Old Retired Superhero in Batman v Superman
We all knew that Diana Prince aka Wonder Woman would be centuries years old in Batman v Superman, so long as they were keeping her origin story as an Amazon from Ancient Greece. But it turns out she'll be even older than we thought: 5,000 years old to be exact, and she'll be a jaded, retired superhero when Batman v Superman begins.

Wonder Woman actress Gal Godot told Empire (via CBM) that Diana retired as a result of undisclosed circumstances that left her disillusioned with humanity. She left the superhero business, much like Jessica Jones or Bruce Wayne, for that matter, "because she's seen it all, she has seen what humans can do, so it was very hard for her to come back and fight."

She also explained how her Diana persona differs from Wonder Woman:

Opening quote
"They have the same attitude. Although when she is Diana she tries to blend in, she is not too outgoing. I don't want people to think she is perfect. She can be naughty."
Closing quote

Although I have my reservations about Wonder Woman as a feminist figure, it's encouraging that the character is going to be flawed, and hopefully complex. Producer Deborah Snyder discussed the character's exploration of gender relations in different time periods:

Opening quote
"Her sexuality is part of her power, but she is also a feminist icon. Gender has been a hot topic, so it is very timely to bring her back. The way we have approached it, especially in the stand alone movie, that is definitely there. Looking back and doing an origin story - and it is a period piece - see the role of women through history. There is a great source of humour in that now. It is so unbelievable you can't even fathom it. You are still making a statement, but having some fun with it."
Closing quote

Zack Snyder also discussed how Wonder Woman came into the film "organically":

Opening quote
"It was incredibly organic how Wonder Woman came into the story. The whole concept came of, 'Let's not save anything. Let's try it all.' Then Wonder Woman's entrance made us realise we were much closer to the Justice League than we thought. We realised we were one movie away."
Closing quote

It's likely that the process was not so much "organic" as it was "trying to catch up with Marvel," but we'll accept that. Godot, for her part, had no idea what she was trying out for, or that it would be so significant to the DCEU. In fact, she thought she was auditioning for Selina Kyle, which would probably have been more conventional casting, but would have been less interesting. Plus, we've already had several Catwomans recently, so it was time for Wonder Woman to stage a comeback.

Wonder Woman will first be introduced in Batman v Superman on March 25, and then will appear in a solo movie on June 23, 2017.
