Will Star Wars Rebels Bring Back a Fan Favorite Character from the Expanded Universe?
Many fans were incensed when the Disney merger jettisoned the entire Star Wars Expanded Universe (now called Star Wars Legends), with a few angered fans famously threatening to spoil The Force Awakens unless Disney and Lucasfilm restored it. That didn't happen, of course, because America doesn't negotiate with terrorists, but Disney has always said that the Expanded Universe is fair game for future storylines in the new universe, and now it looks like a fan favorite villain may be reintroduced in Star Wars Rebels' third season.

Possible spoilers for Star Wars Rebels follow!

According to a new report from Making Star Wars, Grand Admiral Thrawn will be introduced in next season of Star Wars Rebels. Thrawn first appeared in Timothy Zahn's Thrawn trilogy—Heir to the Empire, Dark Force Rising and The Last Command—published in the early 90s, and went on to become an integral part of the Expanded Universe. He is widely regarded as one of the best characters, and especially the best villains, of the EU, making several top ten lists and appearing in many other EU works.

The report claims that Thrawn will be using his notorious tactical genius against the heroes of the starship Ghost, and will serve as a bridge between the new Star Wars mythos and the old:

Opening quote
The introduction of the character opens up a lot of classic ideas and moments from the Expanded Universe to permeate into the post-Return of the Jedi canon. Thrawn may still return with his fleet to one day menace the fledging New Republic. I think with the sophisticated and well-cultivated backdrop the writers have given the canon post-Return of the Jedi climate, that story can now be told in a way that seems possible and yet is still not all about the resurgence of the Empire itself. Who knows, maybe one day he'll inspire the First Order to get serious?
Closing quote

Making Star Wars admits that this is still just a rumor ("consider it rumor, but a rumor with some weight to it," they say), but it seems likely that such a popular character would be reintroduced eventually. And it's more likely that it would happen in Rebels, which caters to fans who are more plugged into the tie-ins in other media, than in the films, which seem to be catering mostly to fans of the films. We'll see when season three of Star Wars Rebels begins, but in the meantime, the latter half of the second season is airing on Wednesdays at 9pm on Disney XD.
