Here's What Over 4000 Fans Voted as Their Favorite Star Wars Movie
The votes are in, and for the most part, the results of our Star Wars fan poll turned out exactly as you'd expect. Empire Strikes Back soundly came out the winner with nearly half of the votes, The Force Awakens was a solid second, partially as a result of its quality and partially as a result of its recency, and Attack of the Clones and Phantom Menace were virtually tied for dead last. But how did Revenge of the Sith possibly beat Return of the Jedi?

Star Wars Fan Poll

Revenge of the Sith may be the best of the prequels, and Return of the Jedi is probably the worst of the original trilogy by far, but this is still surprising. As far as we can tell, it's not a fluke, as the sample size is more than large enough to be statistically significant, and the results were fairly stable after a few hundred votes.

The answer is probably that the poll asked for fans' "favorite" movie, rather than rankings. Most likely, if the vast majority of Star Wars fans were to rank the films from 1-7, Empire Strikes Back would get the highest ranking, followed by A New Hope, and then a close call between Force Awakens and Return of the Jedi, followed by Revenge of the Sith. But as it is, fans of the original trilogy were split in their votes between Empire Strikes Back and A New Hope, so mostly didn't vote for Return of the Jedi, while fans who grew up with the prequel trilogy mostly voted for Revenge of the Sith. That's our guess, anyway.

The Force Awakens' standing was probably inflated somewhat by the excitement surrounding its release, but I still think it deserves the ranking it got. Empire Strikes Back may be a classic, but The Force Awakens beat all six films by a landslide in gender and racial representation, which makes the franchise more inclusive in general. I would argue that it also had better character development and acting than the original trilogy in a lot of cases, but even if it didn't, it probably won more new fans to the franchise than any other Star Wars movie other than A New Hope, which is an achievement in itself.
