Star Wars Rebels May Introduce the One Legends Character We All Desperately Want
The news that Disney was relegating the old Star Wars expanded universe out of official canon sent shockwaves through the franchise's collective of fans when it was announced – so much so, that one group even tried holding the studio to ransom in an attempt to get it reinstated. Of course, Disney does not negotiate with terrorists, and dozens of books and decades of storytelling remain painfully stuck outside of Star Wars canon.

Despite this exile, LucasFilm President Kathleen Kennedy has stated on multiple occasions that themes, characters and even plotlines from what is now known as Star Wars Legends, could be retold in the new canon. There are many of these Legends stories that we would love to see in the new era of Star Wars storytelling, but if you were to ask any fan which character they want to see make an appearance, they would likely all give you one name.

First appearing in Timothy Zahn's book, Heir to the Empire, Grand Admiral Thrawn is perhaps the greatest villain ever to grace the Star Wars universe. Beloved by fans everywhere, Thrawn is best known for taking hold of the remnants of Palpatine's Imperial Navy and doing battle against the New Republic. A tactical genius with a ruthless will and sharp personality, Thrawn was a major thorn (sorry) in The New Republic's side for some time. It's for this exact reason that many theorized that Thrawn might play a part in the new Star Wars trilogy, but that now looks to be very unlikely.

However, according to a report by Making Star Wars last week, all might not be lost for Thrawn fans. Check out an excerpt from the rumor, below.

Opening quote
I have heard that in Season 3 of Star Wars Rebels we will be introduced to none other than the original blue guy himself, Grand Admiral Thrawn from Heir to the Empire. From the sound of things, we're going to see Thrawn as the tactical genius of capital starship warfare he was to Expanded Universe readers in the '90s. However, this time he will be using his evil brand of genius against the the heroes of the starship Ghost.
Closing quote

While this may be a particularly vague rumor, it's not just sheer force of hope that is leading us to believe it. Calls for Legends characters like Thrawn to be introduced to the new canon have been growing to the point where it will become increasingly hard for Disney and LucasFilm to ignore them. While it's unlikely that LucasFilm would want to muddy the waters of their movies with such a move– clearing a path for new storytelling is, after all, the whole reason they hit the reset button on Star Wars canon– Star Wars Rebels creator Dave Filoni has often been more sympathetic to fan requests. Filoni has previously told us that he wanted to put characters from the cancelled Clone Wars series in Rebels "as a thank you to the fans", and has subsequently followed through on those promises. Doing something similar with a Legends character in Rebels could be a nice compromise for LucasFilm, and a chance to meet the fans halfway without having to veer to far off their chosen storytelling path. Add to that the fact that the timelines work out rather well, and it's not hard to see why we're getting so excited about a rumor.
