SyFy Announces When The Expanse Will Return for Its Second Season
It has only just finished its debut season, but already fans of SyFy's The Expanse are asking when it will return for Season 2. Following strong reviews and 'OK' ratings, The Expanse was renewed by SyFy at the end of last year as the network looks to get back to its science fiction roots. The show, based on the popular book series from James S.A Corey, got off to a brilliant start when it launched across multiple platforms last year, but since then viewership has trailed off.

Despite its ratings not setting the world alight, SyFy saw enough to warrant continuing the saga of interplanetary warfare. Indeed, it's hard to fathom quite why The Expanse didn't draw more viewers over its 10 episode run. From the effects to the story, the show is, on the face of it, everything we sci-fi fans had been crying out for from the network. But genre fans are a funny bunch sometimes. No doubt had The Expanse been cancelled we would have all labelled the move as a tragic loss of a sci-fi classic, but instead we're left hoping that enough people show an interest in its second season to allow the showrunners the chance to continue telling the compelling story set forward by James S.A Corey.

As for when The Expanse returns, SyFy has now revealed that we have a little under a year to wait, with a video posted to the network's Youtube channel stating that we won't be seeing the second season until January 2017.

A year is a long time, but perhaps they'll stick Season 1 on Netflix and other streaming platforms, allowing more people to buy into this thoroughly entertaining story. Check out the official synopsis for the show, below.

Opening quote
Hundreds of years in the future, humans have colonized the solar system. The U.N. controls Earth. Mars is an independent military power. The planets rely on the resources of the Asteroid Belt, where air and water are more precious than gold. For decades, tensions have been rising between these three places. Earth, Mars and the Belt are now on the brink of war. And all it will take is a single spark.
