Here's Why Dr. Okun Is Alive in 'Independence: Resurgence
When the cast was announced for the Independence Day sequel was first announced, we were glad to see that a lot of our favorite faces would be returning. Jeff Goldblum as David Levinson, Bill Pullman as President Whitmore, Vivica A. Fox as Jasmine, Brent Spiner as Dr. Okun... wait, what? Anyone who watched the original film can easily recall the scene where Dr. Okun met his end at the end of an alien's tentacle. So how is the character returning for Independence Day: Resurgence?

Speaking to Collider, Spiner reveals how his character is returning, and his answer is less profound than you think. As far as he's concerned, Okun never died:

Opening quote
"People assume Dr. Okun died in the first movie, I don't know why they make that assumption. My eyes were open, this guy, he picks me up ... he puts his fingers on my neck ... I wanted to look at him and go, 'You're not a doctor! You're a soldier, why are you putting your fingers on my neck?' You know? But he didn't say anything. And so, cut to, here I am."
Closing quote

Seems like a stretch to us, and to anyone else whose seen the movie, but as Spiner goes on to say, it seems as if there was always a plan to bring him back thanks to one telling cut line:

Opening quote
"This is a little secret. He had a line, that he said, 'He's dead,' and they cut the line."
Closing quote

So, there you have it. Is it a great explanation? No. Does it make sense? Not really? But look, it's not like anyone's expecting this movie to win any Academy Awards. As long as it's fun and we get to see some aliens blow up some landmarks, we'll be happy.
