LucasFilm Announces the Cast for Star Wars: Episode VIII, Confirms Benicio Del Toro
In case you missed it, Star Wars: Episode VIII has officially started production, and following the release of the spine-tingling announcement video, LucasFilm has confirmed more details on Rian Johnson's 2017 release, including the names on its all important cast sheet.

Opening quote
Star Wars: Episode VIII, which is written and directed by Rian Johnson and continues the storylines introduced in Star Wars: The Force Awakens, welcomes back cast members Mark Hamill, Carrie Fisher, Adam Driver, Daisy Ridley, John Boyega, Oscar Isaac, Lupita Nyong'o, Domhnall Gleeson, Anthony Daniels, Gwendoline Christie, and Andy Serkis. New cast members will include Academy Award winner Benicio Del Toro, Academy Award nominee Laura Dern, and talented newcomer Kelly Marie Tran.

While much of this is as we expected, there are a few surprises packaged within. In terms of returning cast members, Peter Mayhew and Max Von Sydow are not included. While Peter Mayhew may feature in some form, the absence of Von Sydow seems to rule out any flashbacks or expansion for his character, Lor San Tekka.

In addition to his, it looks as though the coveted prize of that extra female lead position has gone, somewhat against the odds, to relative newcomer Kelly Marie Tran. For some time, it was widely reported that the likes of Tatiana Maslany, Gugu Mbatha-Raw, Gina Rodriguez, and Olivia Cooke were the frontrunners for the role, but it appears that LucasFilm have opted for the "talented newcomer" route.

There's still plenty of time for new cast members to be added, but you have to think that if someone like Maslany or Rodriguez were going to be announced, it would have happened now, especially if it's such a major role. Still, finally having Benicio Del Toro confirmed is a major boost to Star Wars fans, and his appearance in the franchise will be one of many things to look forward to in the coming months.

Check out the rest of the announcement, including the announcement video below.
