Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. Star Reveals Ward's Villainous Identity
Spoilers for Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. season three ahead!
Ward has been through quite a journey on Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. He started off as an agent and love interest for Skye, became a turncoat, then the head of Hydra (sort of), and then in the midseason finale, he was killed by Coulson and became some kind of zombie-looking thing. The promo for the midseason premiere indicated that we would find out his fate, but Elizabeth Henstridge has given it away a little bit early.
Speaking on a panel at Wizard World Portland (via Comicbook.com), Henstridge said, "...and now Ward is Hive and takes on the memories of people he's killed, so that's going to have some interesting situations."
Many fans had already guessed that Ward would become Hive, a Marvel Comics villain that is the product of an experiment in Hydra laboratories. Hive is not one being, but a bipedal collective composed of many genetically engineered parasites that were made to embody the Hydra ideal. In the comics, Hive doesn't have any individual identity at all, but it's unclear from Henstridge's statements whether that will be true for Ward. It sounds like he might still have his own identity, but also has the memories and thoughts of other people and/or Hydra.
Agents of S.H.I.E.LD. returns on March 8 at 9pm ET on ABC.
