JJ Abrams Already Knows What the Third Cloverfield Film Would Look Like
The marketing for Cloverfield snuck up on us back in 2008, and after years of waiting, we were delighted to discover that J.J. Abrams' mysterious new film was actually a Cloverfield follow-up (of some sort). Now, J.J. Abrams has revealed that he has plans for a third Cloverfield movie, should this film do well, which may confirm that 10 Cloverfield Lane is more intimately connected to the first film than we previously thought.

Abrams has previously described 10 Cloverfield Lane as a "blood relative" to Cloverfield, although it was unclear what the connection might be. The new film is definitely not a traditional monster movie (although the end of the trailer may indicate that the Cloverfield monster is lurking in the background), there's no found footage gimmick, and none of the same characters appear (for obvious reasons). The viral marketing has revealed that the two share a mythology, and has heavily implied that the disaster that leads the characters to take refuge in the bunker is related to the New York City disaster in Cloverfield.

Now, Abrams is looking to expand that shared universe even more, as he already has ideas for a third movie:

Opening quote
"I think that would be presumptuous, because we're talking about this movie and comparing it to Cloverfield, but I would be lying if I didn't say there was something else that, if we're lucky enough to do it, could be really cool that connects some stories," Abrams told EW.

There's a chance that this still means 10 Cloverfield Lane will only be obliquely connected to Cloverfield, and that Abrams is planning some sort of horror anthology within a shared universe. But it could also mean that if we see a third installment, it will make the connections between Cloverfield and 10 Cloverfield Lane that much clearer.

Opening quote
"This is just this movie, and it's only two films that we're talking about right now," Abrams said. "There is something else that we'd like to do, and hopefully we'll get a shot."
Closing quote

10 Cloverfield Lane hits theaters on March 11.
