J.J. Abrams Says 10 Cloverfield Lane Will Have a "New Monster," Lots of Cloverfield Connections
10 Cloverfield Lane has been called a "blood relative" of Cloverfield, but what does that mean, exactly? It's definitely a follow-up to Cloverfield in some way, and many have been hoping that it would serve as some kind of sequel. But J.J. Abrams has revealed that the connections are more oblique than you would find in a straight sequel, although there are still a lot of them.
Opening quote
"This movie is very purposefully not called Cloverfield 2, because it's not Cloverfield 2," Abrams told Fandango. "The association is clear and there are multiple connections – and there is a bigger idea at play for us with these movies and this connection."

Many have speculated that 10 Cloverfield Lane takes place during the events of Cloverfield, especially after seeing that ominous last shot of the second trailer:

The last shot looks and sounds like Mary Elizabeth Winstead is seeing the after-effects of the military bombing New York City in an effort to kill the Cloverfield monster. But that's apparently not the right answer, either, as Abrams says that 10 Cloverfield Lane does not take place at the same time as Cloverfield:

Opening quote
"No it doesn't, but there's a larger thing at play with these connections," Abrams said. "And the fun of it is that some of these connections – and there's a lot of them – are not the kind of connections you might think. So if you're approaching it as a literal sequel, you'll be surprised to see what this movie is. But while it's not what you might expect from a movie that has the name 'Cloverfield' in it, I think you'll find that you'll understand the connection when you see the whole thing."

But then what was making those roaring sounds at the end of the trailer? There's definitely a monster in this movie (or more than one), but sadly, the Cloverfield monster isn't one of them.

Opening quote
"The story of this movie – and it came to us originally as a spec that was very different in a lot of ways and an unrelated thing altogether – is definitely about different kinds of monsters," he said. "And while the Cloverfield monster isn't in this movie, there's a new monster and there's something else that happens…. but I don't want to ruin the ending."

We already know from the viral marketing campaign that Cloverfield and 10 Cloverfield Lane take place in the same universe and share a backstory, involving the corrupt drilling company Tagruato (which the lead character was about to start working for in the original movie). But just as the backstory did not directly appear in Cloverfield, but rather was explored in the viral marketing and video games, we're guessing the rather convoluted backstory won't be explored in detail in 10 Cloverfield Lane, so we'll be curious to see how the connections will be made obvious to the casual viewer.

He went on to say that with movies like Pacific Rim and Godzilla coming out, a Cloverfield sequel felt redundant and unnecessary (which isn't actually a terrible point). However, he once again teased the possibility of a third movie, and possibly a horror anthology that takes place in a shared universe.

Opening quote
"A larger franchise or anthology would suggest multiple movies, and we're just focusing on this, which is the second of two," Abrams said. "But I will say that there is something larger at play that if we're lucky enough to get to do I think could result in something pretty cool."
