Report: Iron Fist Series Will Introduce Another Avenger with Spin-Off Potential
Finn Jones has been confirmed as our final defender, Danny Rand aka Iron Fist. But according to a new report, casting for another Marvel Comics superhero may be underway, and Marvel is planning on introducing him in the Iron Fist series with spin-off potential a la Daredevil's Punisher. It's not confirmed yet, but we could have a live-action Shang-Chi adaptation on our hands.

In the comics, Shang-Chi is a Chinese-born hero who discovers that his father is an evil mastermind who repeatedly attempts world domination. He was a member of several high-profile teams, such as the Avengers and, of course, the Heroes for Hire alongside Iron Fist, Power Man, Elektra, and Punisher. He also doesn't have mystical superpowers, but rather is highly trained in martial arts, making him a perfect fit for Netflix's gritty, realistic aesthetic (a better fit, arguably, than Danny Rand).

Many fans have been upset that Finn Jones was cast as Iron Fist, both because the character appropriates Asian culture and because we have enough white male superheroes. According to The Hashtag Show (which previously broke the news of Jones' casting and a few Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. spoilers), Marvel is exclusively auditioning Asian male actors for the role, which won't help the appropriation bit, or the fact that the first Asian superhero being a martial arts master is somewhat stereotypical, but at least it will ensure that Shang-Chi won't be played by a white man named Chris.

They also report that Marvel is planning on spinning the character off into his own Netflix show if he is well-received, similar to Punisher. None of this has been confirmed yet, but it makes sense, especially since a live-action film adaptation has been in development on IMDb for a couple of years. The movie itself is probably in development hell by now, but clearly, Marvel is interested in using the character in their live-action universe.

The official description for the Iron Fist series, which has Dexter's Scott Buck on board as showrunner and Jessica Jones' Scott Reynolds penning the script, reads:

Opening quote
Iron Fist centers on Daniel Rand, who fights against the criminal elements corrupting New York with his kung fu skills and ability to summon the power of the fiery Iron Fist. The series picks up with Rand returning to the Big Apple after having gone missing for several years.
Closing quote

Daredevil season two will start streaming on Netflix on March 18, while Luke Cage will premiere later this year. Iron Fist will then get his own solo show, followed by a Defenders miniseries, release dates pending. There will also be a second season of Jessica Jones at some point, but it is unclear whether it will premiere before Defenders.Welcome to EditPad.org - your online plain text editor.
