Marvel's Spider-Man Reboot Casts Zendaya in Leading Role
There's been no word on casting for the Spider-Man reboot since Tom Holland was cast early for a small role in Captain America: Civil War, but now we finally have news of our first co-star. A new report claims that former Disney channel star Zendaya will play opposite Holland in a "key role."

According to Deadline, who broke the news, Zendaya will play a character named "Michelle," and that there's no news on whether she'll play the romantic lead. Since Peter Parker's primary love interests in the comics are Mary Jane Watson and Gwen Stacy, it seems somewhat unlikely. But then again, we've already seen both of those love interests memorably adapted within the last decade, and Peter did have one interest with that name in the comics: Michele Gonzales, a criminal defense lawyer who has a relationship with Peter as an adult. The film takes place while Peter is still in high school, so the character would need to be altered, but it's possible. Considering that Marvel once again passed on adapting Miles Morales to give us yet another whitebread Peter Parker (no offense to Tom Holland, who we hear is amazing), we would hope that they would be open to diverse casting for the romantic lead.

Zendaya is an actress and singer who previously starred on Disney series  K.C. Undercover and Shake It Up!, for which she was nominated for several Young Artist Awards. No other casting news for the Spider-Man reboot has been released yet, but it is set to be directed by Jon Watts and produced by Amy Pascal and Kevin Feige. The film is set to come out in theaters on July 7, 2017.
