The Divergent Series: Allegiant Is Shaping Up to Be the Worst-Reviewed Movie of the Year
The Divergent Series: Allegiant, the adaptation of Veronica Roth's final novel in her Divergent series (which has, of course, been unnecessarily split into two films), comes out next week, and it's shaping up to be the worst-reviewed major film of the year so far. Despite an all-star cast and high production value, the film has an embarrassing (and relatively rare) 0% on Rotten Tomatoes.

To be fair, the reviews probably won't impact fans' desire to see the films, since it already has fans of the books locked in. But for what it's worth, the reviews for the film are universally terrible, with critics calling it "idiotic," "lackluster," "half-baked," "redundant," "kitschy," "staggeringly lazy," "downright ridiculous," and--my personal favorite--the "weakest of weak tea." The most positive review I read came from Forbes, which summed it up with, "'Allegiant' is superior to 'Insurgent' without qualifying as 'good.'"

And yes, it has the dubious distinction of getting a 0% on Rotten Tomatoes, at least as of now, after eleven reviews. Only one other film in 2016 has achieved that feat so far: the Cabin Fever remake from Eli Roth. But that film got so little attention, that it came out a month ago and still only has 15 reviews. The Divergent Series: Allegiant is set to be the first high-profile bomb of the year, and if it gets past 16 reviews without anyone throwing it a bone, it will actually be the worst-reviewed movie of the year.

But if it makes anyone feel any better, the reviewers tend to agree on a few things: Miles Teller is very funny, Theo James is very handsome, and the film makes slightly more sense than Insurgent, which was basically one giant plot hole. So it has a few selling points.

The Divergent Series: Allegiant hits theaters on March 18, but you'd probably be better off staying in and watching the second season of Daredevil.
