The Star Trek TV Series Can't Come Out Until Six Months After Star Trek Beyond
Trekkies who have been underwhelmed by the recent film adaptations of Star Trek finally got their due when CBS announced a new TV series, helmed by Hannibal showrunner Bryan Fuller. But it isn't coming out for a long time, until January 2017, and now we know why: it has to wait a full six months after the release of Star Trek beyond to avoid "marketplace confusion."

As CBS president Leslie Moonves revealed at a media conference (via IGN), this mandated gap was part of the deal when CBS kept the Star Trek television rights in the split with Viacom:

Opening quote
When [CBS] split from Viacom ten years ago, January 1, 2006, one of the big sticking points, as you can imagine, was "Star Trek." You know, we both wanted it. They said "It's a movie!" and I said, "No, no, no, it's a TV show."

Actually, we're both right. So they kept the feature film rights, we kept the television rights; they have ["Star Trek Beyond"] coming out July 22. Our deal with them is that we had to wait six months after their film is launched so there wouldn't be a confusion in the marketplace.
Closing quote

"Confusion in the marketplace" could mean several different things, but it likely refers to whether the two works will take place in the same universe. While huge franchises like Marvel and Star Wars have been bombarding fans with movies and TV shows that are part of the same canon, everyone involved has been adamant that the Star Trek TV show has nothing to do with the world of Star Trek Beyond. The official synopsis reads:

Opening quote
The brand-new "Star Trek" will introduce new characters seeking imaginative new worlds and new civilizations, while exploring the dramatic contemporary themes that have been a signature of the franchise since its inception in 1966.
Closing quote

I doubt that this would have been "confusing," since DC fans seem to understand the concept of separate universes, but maybe they didn't want the Google search competition?

Star Trek Beyond comes out in theaters on July 22. The new Star Trek TV series will debut on CBS in January 2017 before moving to CBS All-Access, and will be the first series developed exclusively for the streaming service.
