James Gunn: Tom Holland Is to Spider-Man What Heath Ledger Was to the Joker
James Gunn has been vocal about his love for Tom Holland's iteration of Spider-Man before, calling him "off-the-charts awesome" after seeing Civil War for the first time, but now he's taken that praise to a whole new level. While sharing the new Civil War trailer today, the Guardians of the Galaxy director claimed Holland was "far and away the best Spidey ever."

As I've said before this was one of my favorite Marvel movies (and, no, it's not something I say about all Marvel...

That might sound like he's throwing shade at Tobey Maguire and/or Andrew Garfield, but he goes on to say that Tom Holland's portrayal is analogous to Heath Ledger's Joker, which means either one of them could be the Jack Nicholson of the bunch:

Opening quote
"Holland is to Spidey/Peter Parker as Downey is to Iron Man, Ledger was to the Joker, and Pratt is to Quill."
Closing quote

It also makes sense to compare Holland to Robert Downey Jr., as he's often considered the "definitive" embodiment of an iconic character, even though there were no major live-action depictions before him. But it's strange to include Chris Pratt's Peter Quill; Chris Pratt is always amazing, but the character was relatively unknown before GOTG came out, so he's not usually the first person you think of when you think "definitive version" of a comics character.

Unless you're the GOTG director, that is, and that's why we should probably take James Gunn's statements with a grain of salt, since it's not like he could ever say anything bad about Marvel. But then again, he's known for being very opinionated, and he's been offering this praise completely unprompted. It's not like he's been saying similar things about Chadwick Boseman's Black Panther or Elizabeth Olsen's Scarlet Witch, even though they're both established and extremely talented actors who are probably good in their roles. And Tom Holland has generally been rumored to be amazing, so we can probably all relax about those animated Spidey eyes now.
