Jake Gyllenhaal has just joined the sci-fi thriller Life in the lead role, opposite Ryan Reynolds and Mission: Impossible - Rogue Nation breakout Rebecca Ferguson. The film will reunite Ryan Reynolds with Deadpool writers Paul Wernick and Rhett Reese, who penned the script.

The film, which will be directed by Safe House and Child 44's Daniel Espinosa, follows astronauts on the International Space Station who take a sample from Mars and find extraterrestrial life forms. They believe it to be a primitive form of life, but discover that it is much more intelligent--and dangerous--than they ever expected.

Reynolds originally signed onto the lead role fresh off of his success in Deadpool, but ran into a conflict with Hitman's Bodyguard, an action movie about a hitman who wants to testify against his employers, which co-stars Samuel L. Jackson, Gary Oldman, Salma Hayek, and Daredevil's Elodie Yung. Jake Gyllenhaal will now star in Life, while Reynolds takes on a supporting role.
