As you may well know, Star Wars: Episode VIII is currently filming in the medieval Croatian City of Dubrovnik. The early stages of that set looked a lot like a planet from the prequels, with the city's ancient architecture being morphed into something that resembled one of George Lucas's more memorable sets. But as new photos from Dubrovnik show, architecture is where these similarities will end, because it looks like Rian Johnson's movie will be introducing a host of new alien creatures to the franchise, and in a very different style to boot.

SPOILERS: More Photos of Star Wars Episode VIII Filming in Dubrovnik

Perhaps its the tuxedos, but I can't be alone in thinking that this is looking more like Doctor Who than it is Star Wars. Of course, we're all aware of how differently a film can appear on screen when compared to grainy set photos such as this, but it seems clear to me that Rian Johnson is stamping his own mark on this movie. If JJ Abrams focused on the military struggles in The Force Awakens, these particular scenes appear to suggest that Rian Johnson will give us a more galactic view of the effects the war between the First Order and the Resistance is having on the various systems in the Star Wars Universe.

As for what exactly is going on in this scene, that's anybody's guess. The formal attire might suggest that we're seeing some of the Galaxy's power brokers meeting to discuss the void left by the New Republic's destruction. Alternatively, could this be the funeral/memorial for everybody's favorite space smuggler?

Star Wars: Episode VIII is released on December 15th 2017
