We might be just 9 months away from the release of Gareth Edwards' Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, but details on the movie remain painfully thin on the ground. What we do know exists mainly in the form of anecdotal snippets from the likes of Kathleen Kennedy, Gareth Edwards, and the film's star, Felicity Jones. At Star Wars Celebration, the overall vibe we got was that Rogue One would eschew the traditional focus on the force sensitive members of the Star Wars galaxy in favor of exploring the trials of normal soldiers during one of the franchise's greatest conflicts. But for some time now there have been reports that at least one major force sensitive character will make an appearance...

Set just before the events of Star Wars: A New Hope, Rogue One: A Star Wars Story will follow a daring group of Rebels in their mission to steal the plans to Emperor Palpatine's first Death Star. The film's setting places it squarely in the time period when Darth Vader is at his most fearsome, a time before the knowledge of his son began to cause an emotional conflict that eventually saw him return to the light. Because of this timing, rumors of Darth Vader's appearance in Rogue One are not a new thing, but now a new report is claiming that not only will Vader appear in the film, but he'll also have a major role to play in its story.

According to MoviePilot Rogue One will give us a chance to see Darth Vader's power in all its glory as he patrols the battlefield laying waste to any Rebel in his path.

In the original trilogy movies, Vader's power was often implied more than it was put on show. And, while the likes of Star Wars Battlefront (seen above) and last year's Lords of the Sith book have helped us to envisage Vader on the battlefield, we've never really seen such a thing on the big screen. This particular report also claims that Vader will be joined by Boba Fett and a squad of his fellow Bounty Hunters, including a live-action iteration of Clone Wars legend, Cad Bane. So, if the Empire has Vader and the Galaxy's finest Bounty Hunters, what does the Rebellion have to offer?

Such is the lack of information about Rogue One, various sources are providing conflicting reports on whether or not Vader will be joined on screen by other force-sensitive characters. While our initial impression from Star Wars Celebration was that this film would be free of Jedi, a number of people jumped on a recent update to the Rogue One IMDB page that noted Emeson Nwolie was playing a 'Religious Warrior' as evidence that the Jedi might make an appearance.

While it might be possible that a Jedi will appear in the movie, we still have Gareth Edwards' remarks ringing in our head. At Celebration in Anaheim last year, Edwards appeared to suggest that the film will pride itself in its lack of force-sensitives....

Opening quote
"It's about the fact that god's not coming to save us, and we're on our own," said Edwards. "The absence of the Jedi is omnipresent in the film. It hangs over the whole movie."
Closing quote

Edwards' comments are, of course, open to interpretation, but there's a good chance we'll get some clarification on Rogue One's plot in the very near future. A full trailer is expected to be unveiled at Star Wars Celebration in London this July, but a teaser could well be coming at some point in the next few weeks.
