Why Rogue One: A Star Wars Story Might Feature the Most Bad-Ass Stormtroopers Yet
If there's one thing we know about the upcoming Star Wars spin-off, Rogue One: A Star Wars Story (and we really don't know much), it's that it's likely to feature a lot of Stormtroopers. Set during the build up to the events seen in A New Hope, Rogue One will explore a time when Stormtroopers (and the Empire as a whole) were in their pomp across the galaxy. The traditional white and black Stormtrooper armor is one that has seen many iterations over the years, but a new report suggests that Rogue One might feature a more elusive and generally more bad-ass form of the franchise's favorite cannon fodder.

According to TMZ LucasFilm has just registered the trademark for the term 'Shadow Troopers', a move that will allow the studio to feature the characters on just about every form of merchandise imaginable. The timing of this filing would seem to suggest the studio is targeting the merchandise for Rogue One, which begs the question, what has Gareth Edwards got up his sleeve with this one?

Those who are long-time followers of Star Wars video games and the expanded universe stories will be aware that the terms Shadow Trooper and Shadow Stormtrooper have been used for an array of characters over time. Shadow Troopers have ranged from Dark Jedi-hybrids wielding wannabe lightsabers, to simple, average-joe Stormtroopers with different colored armor. It's unlikely that either of these extremes will be used in Rogue One, and instead we'd like to think that we'll be seeing another form of Shadow Trooper that was used by the Empire an elite shocktrooper with the ability to activate a cloaking device for stealth missions. In fact, we've probably already had our first look at what these Shadow Troopers will look like, courtesy of Donnie Yen's leaked photo, above.

So why is this exciting? Well, if Gareth Edwards' movie features these Shadow Troopers in a prominent role it could be the most exciting take on science fiction's most-iconic henchmen we've ever seen. Stormtroopers have for many years been the laughing stock of sci-fi bad guys, after all, their lack of aim and knack for being beaten to death by Teddy Bears don't exactly scream fearsome. But as TR-8R showed in The Force Awakens, we all want a reason to love Stormtroopers, and Rogue One's Shadow Troopers might just be our best reason yet.

While it's perfectly possible that these Shadow Troopers will get about as much time as The Force Awakens' Snow Troopers and Flame Troopers, we're hoping that Rogue One gives us a real reason to forget scenes like this.....

With Star Wars: The Force Awakens, similar trademarks were filed for the likes Kylo Ren and BB-8, both of whom featured heavily on merchandise for the movie. Could these new Shadow Troopers be the villainous face of the Empire for the first ever Star Wars spin-off? Let's hope so.
