Watch: All the Similarities Between Star Wars: A New Hope and The Force Awakens
Star Wars: The Force Awakens has sparked a lot of debate since its record breaking release at the end of last year, with many fans arguing over everything from Rey's parentage to the identity of Supreme Leader Snoke. Plot Minutiae aside, one of the biggest talking points from JJ Abrams' movie was its many similarities to Star Wars: A New Hope. Many claimed that these similarities were bordering on plagiarism, while others (myself included) argued that such similarities were a necessary tool with which to introduce a new generation of characters while keeping fans happy.

Regardless of your view on them, there's no denying that The Force Awakens had many visual similarities to its predecessor. From planting crucial information into a charismatic droid to scenes in a cantina with an exotic array of aliens, these similarities were many in number and varied in their purpose. Some scenes, such as the entry into Maz's castle, felt like mere nods to the original trilogy. Other scenes, such as the Starkilller Trench Run, felt somewhat unnecessary. Now, a fan has compiled a visual comparison of all the moments in Star Wars: The Force Awakens that resembled a moment from the original trilogy.

Clearly there are many similarities between TFA and ANH, but it's hard to see many of these as negative. The shot of a huge capital ship emerging on the screen at the start of a movie is something inherent to Star Wars, as is witnessing a squadron of 'good guy' star-fighters moving into formation. As for the rest, we'll let you decide whether or not they were necessary.
