Fan Poll: Who Was Killed in the Walking Dead Season Finale?

Huge spoilers for The Walking Dead season finale ahead!

All right, here we are. The Walking Dead season finale aired last night, including Negan's highly anticipated entrance, and they did exactly what we are all hoping and praying they wouldn't do: they left us on an awful, egregiously manipulative cliffhanger (read our full, and very angry review here). Supposedly, we'll have to wait until October to find out who dies, but personally, I think we already know. What do you think?

Let's break this down. The only plausible options are the characters who were with Negan at the time: Rick, Carl, Michonne, Daryl, Sasha, Rosita, Abraham, Eugene, Aaron, Maggie, and Glenn (which leaves out Morgan and Carol, two options who were considered fairly likely in our original dead pool). We pretty much know for a fact that it wasn't Rick or Carl, since Negan said right before using Lucille: "Anybody moves, anybody says anything, cut the boy's other eye out and feed it to his father and then we'll start." That line would have made no sense if either Rick or Carl was about to get the bat.

Other than that, technically any of these characters are possible, but Aaron, Sasha, and Rosita seem highly unlikely, since the audience hasn't gotten attached to them enough for their deaths to make a real impact. Eugene just started becoming braver and is set to lead the charge in making their own ammunition, and Maggie has been poised to take over Hilltop like she does in the comics (plus, Negan historically has a problem with hurting women and children). Michonne would be a random choice considering the actual scene, since Negan barely acknowledged her existence, so that would be a strange last scene for her. Plus, the writers have indicated that Michonne is taking Andrea's place in the comics as Rick's long-running romantic partner, and while I don't think they have much chemistry, that seems to be the game plan within the show.

So that leaves the three options that were most likely to begin with: Abraham, Daryl, or Glenn. Abraham has gotten more of a spotlight this season, which, as we saw with Beth, is often a sign that a character is on his way out (not to mention that he's found romantic happiness, which is pretty much a death knell). Further, Denise received his comic book death, which means he might have been spared specifically so he could die at Negan's hands. Daryl is also a likely option, especially since he was on Talking Dead last night with Jeffrey Dean Morgan; but then again, the fans would riot, and he was already shot at the end of last week's manipulative episode, so that was probably TWD's version of "no one is safe."

Honestly, I'm pretty sure at this point that it's Glenn. This cop-out was probably the writers' twisted way of differentiating the show from the comics, even though they killed the same person, and some eagle-eyed fans have pointed out that every character was shown twice in the "eeny, meeney, miney, moe" sequence except for Glenn, which may indicate that he was picked last. Also, Steven Yeun is currently the star of a movie, and probably won't make it back for when TWD starts filming season seven in the beginning of May, and THR reports that he had only a one-year contract when he returned for season six. And if you listen to the slowed-down audio of the ending courtesy of Tumblr, it very much sounds like Glenn saying, "Mag- Maggie?", his last line in the comics, and Maggie screaming out Glenn's name in the background. RIP Glenn, you were a great character, and it's too bad we won't care about your death nearly as much seven months from now.
