Charlie Cox Says The Defenders Will Start Filming in Late 2016
After Jessica Jones was renewed for a second season and Daredevil's latest outing was a huge hit, we assumed it would be a while before we saw that planned Defenders series. But as it turns out, we might have to wait longer than we expected for Jessica Jones and Daredevil's next seasons, as Charlie Cox says that Defenders will start filming later this year.

Opening quote
"What we do know is at the end of this year we're going to be making The Defenders and, of course, Daredevil is very much a part of that foursome," Cox told reporters at a Netflix event (via The Independent). "I have no idea what the storyline is going to be for that show. I'm very excited to see how those world's combine…and interested to see tonally how those shows become one."
Closing quote

The actor also claimed that he has no idea what the future holds for his own series, Daredevil:

Opening quote
"We don't know if there's going to be a season three. I certainly don't know" Cox said. "In terms of wrapping up any storylines, maybe they'll do some of that in The Defenders. Or maybe they won't."
Closing quote

I can't think of any reason there wouldn't eventually be a third season for Daredevil; we don't know the ratings of the second season yet, but it was so successful among critics and fans, I can't imagine that it dropped significantly from its record-breaking first season. However, we might have to wait a while for more Daredevil solo adventures. Luke Cage is already set for fall, and Iron Fist is beginning production to be released in 2017. If Marvel/Netflix sticks to its two-shows-per-year model, and Defenders presumably comes out in 2017 as well, then both Jessica Jones' confirmed second season and Daredevil's unconfirmed third season will have to wait until 2018, at least.

It isn't terribly surprising that Defenders is coming out before more Daredevil, since we've already gotten two seasons, but I'm disappointed that they've seemingly postponed Jessica Jones. It wasn't quite as much of a ratings hit as Daredevil, but it was arguably even more critically acclaimed, and that buzz would likely lead to a much-hyped second season. Maybe they'll just strike while the iron's hot and release three shows next year, which would make me much happier.

Cox's "foursome" comment also seems to confirm that Punisher and/or Elektra won't be added to the Defenders line-up. I'm less disappointed by this, because I don't think either character plays well with others, and I look forward to seeing Elektra continue her arc on Daredevil and Punisher possibly getting his own solo series

Luke Cage will debut on Netflix on September 30th, followed by Iron Fist and Defenders in 2017, and Jessica Jones season two--at some point.
