Natalie Portman Out, Tessa Thompson in For 'Thor: Ragnarok'
There have been rumors for years that Natalie Portman didn't exactly relish her role as Jane Foster in Thor and its sequel, Thor: The Dark World (and after watching her go through the motions in the latter film, we tend to believe them), and now it looks like the actress has gotten her wish and will not be returning to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Instead, the female lead of the upcoming Thor: Ragnarok is reportedly going to Creed actress Tessa Thompson. According to Deadline, Thompson will portray both Thor's love interest in the film as well as a "kind of superhero" who will show up in other Marvel movies. So... who on Midgard could she be?

The easiest guess would be to say that she is simply taking over the role of Jane Foster. That would automatically make her Thor's love interest without the film having to untangle a breakup that happens off-screen, which would be especially awkward following the lovey-dovey end-credits scene of Dark World. It could also allow Foster to take up the mantle of Thor like she's done in the comics to fulfill the superhero aspect of the character. Though, if that were the case, that would mean that bankable Chris Hemsworth would no longer be Thor in the MCU, and we don't see Marvel taking that risk.

A more likely option for Thompson's character may be Amora the Enchantress. The powerful mystic is a frequent love interest of Thor in the comics, and even though she is normally viewed as a villain, she has taken the God of Thunder's side in a number of storylines, which could fit nicely with the "kind of superhero", i.e. antihero, mold. Another possibility could be Valkyrie, an Asgardian warrior and sometimes Avenger from the comics who has also been romantically linked to Thor on occasion.

But whomever Thompson is playing, one thing seems pretty clear: Portman's run in the MCU is almost definitely over with.
