The 100: Is [SPOILER] About to Become the New Commander?
Possible spoilers for The 100 follow!
Last week on a wonderful, game-changing episode of The 100, the truly terrible Ontari killed all of the Nightbloods in their sleep and won the Conclave by default, only for Clarke to steal the Flame, which prevents Ontari from ascending and becoming Commander. Ontari has been taking the "fake it until you make it" approach, but it seems unlikely that she will actually become Commander. Her character hasn't been established (or likable) enough for that to be a sufficiently exciting reveal, so it seems inevitable that someone else will receive the Flame. But who will it be?
A lot of fans have been speculating that Clarke will become the new Commander, but right now, all signs are pointing to Raven. As we see in the promo, Clarke, Bellamy, and Jasper are trying to exorcise A.L.I.E. from her, and ultimately take drastic measures:
It's not officially confirmed that that's Raven's neck receiving the Flame, but it certainly seems like it. This would make sense from a narrative perspective, since Raven has always been a bad-ass, and is probably the only character with as passionate a fanbase as Lexa. I, for one, would love to see Raven become Commander, especially since the A.I. would enhance her badassery to a whole new level.
Whether this fits into the mythology of the show is a little bit trickier. On the one hand, Raven currently has an A.L.I.E. 1.0 chip inside of her, so it would make sense that the updated version of the technology would be able to override the older version (or, at least, it makes sense in a sci-fi "because science" kind of a way). But on the other hand, it's been well-established that a person who isn't a Nightblood can't receive the Flame, or they'll die. We've seen Raven bleed many times, and her blood isn't black, so she's not a Nightblood. However, we now know that Becca was able to become a Nightblood with gene therapy, so it's possible that they could implant the A.I. and then give her gene therapy before the chip kills her.
There also might have been some foreshadowing that this would happen last week, when Raven was fully taken over by A.L.I.E. As far as I remember, this hasn't happened with any other character. Other characters have been controlled by A.L.I.E. in the sense that she tells them what to do and they obey her, but she hasn't possessed anyone else until now. Does this mean that there's something different about Raven's biology, maybe in a way that would make her her more compatible with the gene therapy? Could she be a descendant of Becca, the first Nightblood who was originally one of the Sky People? That might be a little on-the-nose (although Lindsey Morgan's imitation of Erica Cerra was completely spot-on), and it's possible that this is just the first time we've seen this particular ability of A.L.I.E.'s, but I still vote for Raven for President Commander.
