A Frontrunner Emerges for the Star Wars: Han Solo Movie
Thousands of actors have auditioned for the Han Solo Star Wars Anthology movie, arguably the most coveted role for a young actor in Hollywood right now. Now, a new report claims that we finally have a frontrunner: Alden Ehrenreich, best known for the Coen brothers comedy Hail, Caesar! and the failed YA franchise Beautiful Creatures.

Han Solo

It was previously reported that the contenders for the Han Solo movie had come down to a shortlist including Ehrenreich, Emory Cohen (Brooklyn), Taron Egerton (Kingsman), and Jack Reynor (Macbeth, Transformers: Age of Extinction). Now, Deadline reports that Ehrenreich's "impressive performance" in screen tests has made him the preferred candidate.

This isn't official yet, and it's very possible that another actor will get the role. But either way, it looks like Disney is tending towards actors that have been in some high-profile projects, but aren't necessarily household names. The above-mentioned actors already beat out some bigger names, including Miles Teller, Dave Franco, Scott Eastwood, Logan Lerman, and Chandler Riggs.

All in all, it makes sense that Disney would want to stay away from actors who are already famous, and especially actors who are tied to other big franchises. It will be easier for the audience to suspend disbelief and accept the actor as such a beloved character if he doesn't have significant baggage, and Divergent, Walking Dead, and Fantastic Four all qualify. (I'll bet Ehrenreich is pretty happy that Beautiful Creatures flopped right about now.) Disney has cast up-and-coming actors for all of their prominent new roles (with the exception of Oscar Isaac, and possibly Felicity Jones, although she isn't connected to any large franchises after the Amazing Spider-Man series was killed off), and it's worked like gangbusters so far.
